When Indian girls go blonde! Part 1

Do blondes have more fun? I have no idea. I've been wanting to go blonde for years but have always been a scaredy cat about it. I've had jet black hair my whole life and until a few years ago, when I got my first ombre, I still had virgin hair. Translation: I had literally never colored or processed my hair. Say what? My fellow Indians girls can feel me on this one. Most Indian parents are--how do I say this nicely?--not huge fans of changing your hair. To this day, I remember BEGGING my parents for a perm so I could look like DJ Tanner from Full House and being DENIED. DENIED. DENIED. Their argument: It'll ruin your hair/It's too expensive/Your hair will fall out.

Fast forward, "Sowmya the Virgin (haired)" comes across this photo of a racially ambiguous model with golden hair online. I have no clue who she is or what she's selling but I've been coveting her hair ever since. This began my blonde obsession and I began a vision board of sorts of photos; celebrities, models, randos, basically anyone who sort of looks like me with blonde hair. I stalked Instagram, celebrity blogs, Pinterest, YouTube, wherever I could find these inspiration photos so that ONE DAY, I would make the plunge.  Let me just say, the pickings were SLIM. Googling "Indian girls with blonde hair" yields few results. I even found articles bashing Indian actresses who tried to color their hair! Who wrote these? My parents?

I ended up with Ciara and Karrueche Tran as the celebrities that most resembled me in skin tone and decided that these were my hair muses. I loved the golden blonde and how it gave them a warm, almost glowing look. Around this time, I saw a bunch of my brunette homegirls taking the blonde plunge like publicist Brianne Pins. If they could do it, what was I waiting for? So, with the power of Ciara and Karrueche by my side, I booked my hair appointment...

Stay tuned for part 2 of "When Indian Girls Go Blonde" for my blow-by-blow bleaching process and the scary first day!

UPDATE: I have gotten SO MANY questions and comments about this post. I realized if you Google "Indian and blonde" this shows up. If you have any questions, tweet me @SowmyaK and let me know how your blonde ambition goes :)
