Adventures at SXSW (Day 1): Music industry summer camp begins!

My first SXSW is officially underway! I headed down to Austin, Texas yesterday for the annual music convention but learned very quickly, it's really just music summer camp. I've run into so many friends, from NY, LA and all over the world, that it really feels like one big reunion. On my flight down to Austin, I had my friend Kaz (The Stashed) in front of me, Mikey Fresh (Vibe) to my left and new friend Pita (FootAction) to my right.

After touching down and checking into my hotel, I picked up my speaker's badge, which in addition to making me look super legit, gets me into all the SXSW panels and shows. I rolled with Kaz and Mikey to the ASCAP show where DJ Drama and Don Cannon hosted a showcase (inside what appeared to be a southern trap house) featuring OG Maco, Dej Loaf, BJ the Chicago Kid and others. I was stoked to catch Maco, because I've been wanting to check him out this trip.

Kaz and I then headed to Vic Mensa's solo show which was EXCELLENT. I haven't seen Vic since CMJ 2013 and he's matured so much as a stage performer. He commands the stage and his confidence is palpable. He also previewed some tracks from his forthcoming Traffic album and everything sounded dope. I chopped it up with Vic for a bit afterwards and he was kind enough to give me a little selfie action. I finally walked back to my hotel around 3:00am exhausted. Hopefully I can wake up for my panel tomorrow. Eeks.
