Where do dimes go to eat? Well, Dimes in NYC, of course. I've had this restaurant on my radar for a while but since I'm rarely in Chinatown--except to get my annual haircut at my top secret salon--I hadn't made it down. Luckily, the homie Jenn (Atlantic Records) got me outside of my usual 10-block comfort zone and we hit up Dimes on Mother's Day. Now, let me preface: This place is hella far. I got off the C train at Canal and damn near walked a marathon. Sweaty and gross, I was beyond happy that we somehow beat Dimes' notoriously looonnnnng wait and got seated immediately. My calves thank you, Dimes.
The vibe is very welcoming and airy. They don't have air conditioning so I suggest coming through before summer. It's casual and hipster. Chucks and sundresses were definitely out. Everything on the menu is healthy (Duh. That's how the place keeps the cute hipster, model chicks coming back). After fighting every urge in my body to get the breakfast sandwich, I got the Spring Hash which was filling, healthy and didn't make me hate myself afterwards. Black rice with a sunny side up egg, zucchini, eggplant, chili ginger and scallion. I literally ate every morsel of rice. I was hungry after that walk.
Jenn got the famous carob acai bowl with banana and buckwheat granola. I know that acai is super in right now and everyone says you have to try it at Dimes but it just doesn't do it for me. Unless you like eating cold pudding with fruit, I say skip the bowl and get the hash. Your tummy will thank me later.
